Dictionary of Vocational Psychology

Vocational Psychology

The study of the psychological aspects of work-related behavior and experience. The central concern of the field has traditionally been the identification of psychological traits, knowledge and skills, and biographical events that characterize successful individuals in different occupations. Vocational psychologists are also concerned with such issues as the development of expertise across the lifespan, finding work and choosing occupations, adapting to the demands of work, the experience of work and coping with the emotions it spurs, relating to others in the workplace, negotiating work and nonwork roles, and resolving work dysfunctions. Advances in vocational psychology are applied through interventions by counseling psychologists, counselor educators, industrial-organizational and consulting psychologists, and others.
