Values Systems

Colozzi and Colozzi (2000) propose two values systems that function to motivate career decision-making. Expressed values are those of which the person is aware; they seem to be influenced by external factors. Implied values are generally hidden and accessible "through an in-depth analysis and reflection of interests" (Colozzi and Colozzi, p. 65). A lack of insight into one's implied values system leads to a life "filled with confusion, leading to a lack of clarity of beliefs or purpose" (Colozzi and Colozzi, p. 66). This differentiation between 'surface' and 'depth' features of what one cares about is similar to various theories of values, counseling, and career development.
