Occupational Perception

Perception of the features of occupations, and by extension jobs and careers. Such features may include income level, status, sextyping (i.e., the percentage of men and women in the occupation), types of work activities associated with the occupation, and traits of workers associated with the occupation. Very closely associated with knowledge of occupations, or more properly knowledge of the sterotypes commonly held about occupations. It has been largely assumed that occupational perceptions of occupations by mid-adolescence become relatively consistent and stable across individuals in a society. However, there may exist individual differences even in adulthood in the perceived features of occupations. Closely related concepts are occupational stereotypes and occupational knowledge.
