Narrative

A central construct in the contextual theory of career (Young, Valach, & Collin, 1996), narrative refers to the interpretation of events over the long-term. Narratives vary in their level of coherence; coherent narratives are those whose events are sequenced in temporal order in a way that makes sense to the individual. Narrative methods may be used in the study either or individual careers or of the histories of groups in which individual careers play out; an example of the latter is Bennis' (1997) account of great groups.
