Mental Imagery

Mental activity that creates the subjective experience of sensory experience (particularly "seen" images), absent sensory experience directly recorded through the senses. Our concern is not with the neurophysiological basis for mental imagery, but rather with its role in vocational behavior and experience. Anne Roe (1956, pp. 76-77) discussed research she had conducted on individual differences across different groups of scientists in the type of different types of mental imagery (visual, verbal, or imageless) they tended to experience. Foster (2001, 2002) discussed applications of mental imagery exercises to career interventions, particularly with managers and executives, and generalizing from decades of research on the use of imagery in sport psychology.
