Dictionary of Vocational Psychology

Aptitude

The potential ease of learning particular skills or knowledge. Aptitudes are inferred through the observation of an individual's current skills or knowledge, generally through ability tests (Carroll, 1993). It becomes progressively more difficult to predict an individual's potential to acquire knowledge and skills the further into the future one tries to predict; however, the use of valid and reliable measures of certain abilities supports such predictions in many cases, at least enough to warrant their use in practical situations.
