Apprenticeship

A period of time--usually of several years--during which a master (a worker with expertise in an occupation) teaches the apprentice (student) the arts and skills of the work. Traditionally, the sequence of developent of such occupational skill was apprenticeship, followed by a journeyman stage, followed by master level work. Apprenticeships have largely been supplanted in the United States by formal education (at least as formal roles), but in some nations--especially Germany--the apprenticeship system remains a formally recognized option in career development.
