Academic Persistence

Remaining in school, as in not leaving high school or college before graduation. In the United State, there are concerns that certain groups (e.g., Latinos, American Indians) leave school early, and a corresponding effort to understand why. For example, Jackson, Smith, and Hill (2001), in a small (N = 12) qualitative study of American Indian college seniors, identified family support, structured social support (e.g., clubs), faculty/staff warmth, previous experience in a college environment, level of racism experienced, and the degree to which they developed independence and assertiveness as being important contributing factors in academic persistence.
